The engine creates massive amount of heat during its combustion operation. This heat, if allowed to suffice at an extended time, can cause grave engine damage and component failure. Controlling this heat is the job of the cooling system. This is what keeps the engine at its constant operating temperature level. By maintaining it at an ideal temperature, the engine can work smoothly and unrestrictedly, allowing it to generate peak power and productive output. The efficiency of the cooling system depends mainly on its working components such as the fan clutch. This is the thermostatically-controlled device located between the water pump pulley and the fan that is sensitive to engine speed and under-hood temperature.
When the engine is cool or even at a normal operating temperature, the fan clutch partially uncouples the mechanically-driven radiator cooling fan, which is located at the front of the water pump and is driven by a belt and pulley that is attached to the engine's crankshaft. The fan clutch controls the radiator fan and only activates it when additional cooling is needed. This saves power since the engine does not have to totally drive the fan. However, if the engine temperature rises beyond the clutch's engagement temperature setting, the fan is allowed to fully engage, drawing greater volume of cool outside air through the radiator. This in turn allows the radiator to maintain the engine coolant's temperature at a tolerable level.
